Nutrition Hack for Trail Mix

Today is National Trail Mix Day—the perfect time to create your own healthy antioxidant-rich blend as a nutrition hack. Trail Mix is an excellent way to fill up on healthy fats, fuel your workout and load up on antioxidants. However, it’s best to measure out your serving in advance—we all know how easy it can be to eat trail mix mindlessly. Everything in moderation!

The history of trail mix is hard to trace back, though it was mentioned in Jack Kerouac’s brilliant novel, The Dharma Bums, which was published in 1958. This modern day take is super fast and easy to prepare and will satisfy your sweet tooth. More importantly, it is chock full of nutrients.

Walnuts are packed with anti-inflammatory omega-3 essential fatty acids, copper and manganese. Cashews, almonds and Brazil nuts are also rich in healthy fats and an array of other important nutrients. Golden raisins contain antioxidant flavonoids, protein, calcium, iron and magnesium.

Thrown in some of your favorite dried fruit to add different textures if you like. Just be cautious of their sugar content, as it can be very hefty. You can also swap some of the nuts out if they aren’t your favorites. For example, you can substitute pecans for walnuts, peanuts for Brazil nuts, regular raisins for golden, and so on.

1 cup walnuts 1 cup Brazil nuts 1 cup cashews 1 cup almonds ½ cup golden raisins 1/2 c. dark chocolate chips (opt for unsweetened for the healthiest route) ½ tsp cinnamon
