Nutrition Hack for Pumpkin Spice Latte

The Pumpkin Spice Latte has arrived—and it’s ubiquitous and very hard to resist. It’s become the classic fall beverage and the perfect way to get in the mood of the season. But if you’re trying to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle, it may not be your best choice of beverage. One Grande Starbucks version packs 310 calories, a whopping 50 grams of sugar and a controversial little ingredient called carrageenan, a seaweed extract used to add texture to food and beverages. The problem with carrageenan is that it offers zero nutritional benefits yet causes inflammation in the body, which is the root of all diseases.

We’ve hacked the Pumpkin Spice Latte so that you can enjoy one that’s just as delicious but much more nutritious. You’ll save money and can control all of the ingredients with this awesome nutrition hack. Follow these easy steps to make your own take that rivals Starbuck’s version and any other coffee shop on the map.

1 cup non-fat milk or 1 cup full-fat coconut milk 1 cup coffee 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tbsp pumpkin spice or maple syrup 2 tbsps pumpkin purée 1 tsp whipped cream

½ tsp pumpkin pie spice

Prepare a cup of coffee as you normally would. While it’s brewing, combine the milk, syrup, vanilla extract, pumpkin purée and pumpkin pie spice in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, whisking continuously until it’s steamy. Remove from heat and pour into a blender and mix until frothy. This should take 15 to 20 seconds.

Pour the froth onto your cup of coffee. Add the whipped cream for garnish and sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice.
