The Study

Recent studies conducted at McMaster University in Canada showed that consistent exercise delayed the aging process and its physical signs in mice. Researchers followed up with human subjects of wide-ranging ages and found marked changes in the dermis, the layer of skin underneath the epidermis, after significant periods of consistent exercise. Typically, with time, the dermis thins and loses elasticity. The results are sagging skin with a more translucent appearance. The study participants developed healthier, thicker layers of skin, which imparted a smoother, less wrinkled appearance. Some participant’s skin appeared decades younger!

The study confirmed that consistency is key; being a weekend warrior is not going to cut it if you want results. While researchers are not exactly sure why the skin’s appearance improves with exercise, we do know that it stimulates circulation, which delivers more oxygen to skin cells and boosts collagen production. Exercise also releases endorphins, which reduces stress and improves our moods. Less frowning = less wrinkling.

The Modalities

What you do is up to you—what’s most important is that you do it regularly. Be consistent with your routine and continuously step up the amount you exercise over time. If you’re just getting started, go easy—give yourself time to get back in shape. Then continue to boost the duration and intensity of your workout and the number of days you do it.

A good rule is to incorporate all three pillars of training: strength, flexibility and cardiovascular. Go walking or jogging, lift weights, do cardio work and try classes that will keep you interested—anything from boxing, dance and spinning to yoga and Pilates.
